Real Life

Real life has interfered with my extension development lately. I just haven’t had a chance to work on much of it. We do have a beta version of Forecastfox 0.9.5 that we are still working on, and I have started new versions of Location Navigator and Flickr Sidebar. Hopefully, I can find some time soon to get back to it.

Forecastfox is a Firefox extension that lets you get international weather forecasts from AccuWeather.com, and display it in any toolbar or statusbar.

Flickrsidebar 0.2

I’m hard at work on a new version of my Flickrsidebar extension. I’ve completely reworked it to use an xpcom backend component. Lots of functionality is being added based on login and user permissions. Expect to see this greatly improved version in the next couple of weeks.

The Flickr sidebar is a Firefox extension that lets you search through or view a full list of your photos, your favorites, everyone's photos, your individual contacts, or your groups. Double clicking a photo opens it's page in the current tab.

Flickr Sidebar 0.1.2

Flickr Sidebar 0.1.2 has been released. Changes for this version are:

  • Added locales: cs-CZ, fr-FR, it-IT, pt-Br, and zh-CN
  • Added support for Bon Echo, and nightly trunk builds.
  • Removed anonymous functions for better debugging.
  • Fixed empty menu item by falling back to the username if the realname doesn’t exist for a contact.

My Firefox Extensions

I thought I would give a quick run down of what Firefox extensions I’ve created, work on, and are currently maintaining. Just so you have an idea of what I work on, what I have worked on, and what I’ve abandoned.

Forecastfox
Get international weather forecasts from AccuWeather.com, and display it in any toolbar or statusbar with this highly customizable and unobtrusive extension.
This extension is one I am actively working on. Version 0.8.5 has been released, and work on 0.9 is well under way.
Location Navigator
Location Navigator is an extension that lets you grab a location, select a portion of the location that varies, and then navigate up or down from that starting spot.
This is is actively maintained as well. Probably not as frequently as Forecastfox though. Version 0.6 has been released, and I’ve made design plans for version 0.7
Flickr Sidebar
This Flickr sidebar is used for viewing and searching photo lists. You can access it by the command key Ctrl+Shift+F, the toolbar button, or clicking on the menu option View|Sidebars|Flickr Sidebar. Once you have authorized the extension to work with your flickr account, you can search through or view a full list of your photos, your favorites, everyone’s photos, your individual contacts, or your groups. Double clicking a photo opens it’s page in the current tab. You can also use all the standard link modifiers to open in tabs and windows.
This is an extension I’ve just started. Version 0.1 has been released, and I have some ideas for future version.
Tip of The Day
Adds a “Tip of the Day” bar to the bottom of the window. The reason I created this extension is to implement bug 19463.
I have not released a new version of this since Firefox version .10. I’m currently reworking this so a new version should be available soon.
Rsszilla
This extension was going to implement an RSS reader for mozilla applications. I never released any code for it, and it is now abandoned.
Finder
Finder was going to be used to integrate an extension lookup web service with Firefox. I never released any code for it, and it is now abandoned.

Flickr Sidebar

I’ve released a new extension for Firefox.  It’s called Flickr Sidebar, and it works with Firefox version 1.5 through 1.6a1.  You can get it here.
Below is a short description:

This Flickr sidebar is used for viewing and searching photo lists. You can access it by the command key Ctrl+Shift+F, the toolbar button, or clicking on the menu option View|Sidebars|Flickr Sidebar. Once you have authorized the extension to work with your flickr account, you can search through or view a full list of your photos, your favorites, everyones photos, your individual contacts, or your groups. Double clicking a photo opens it’s page in the current tab. You can also use all the standard link modifiers to open in tabs and windows.

Extension Pimping

As an extension author, you like to see your extension get used by the widest audience possible. To do this, sometimes you have to pimp your extension out to several places so that it can get exposure. This brings up several questions. How much is too much? Where should I post about my extension? How ethical is it to try and get your extension into top ratings, or top download lists? What is the best approach for letting people know about your extension?
