Real Life

Real life has interfered with my extension development lately. I just haven’t had a chance to work on much of it. We do have a beta version of Forecastfox 0.9.5 that we are still working on, and I have started new versions of Location Navigator and Flickr Sidebar. Hopefully, I can find some time soon to get back to it.

Forecastfox is a Firefox extension that lets you get international weather forecasts from AccuWeather.com, and display it in any toolbar or statusbar.

Location Navigator

I’ve started work on my next version of Location Navigator. Some things to look for in this next release:

  • I’ve added prefetching for up/down navigation.
  • Improved the way navigation operations are stored in the back-end.
  • Made prefetch, history, and valid checking asynchronous operations.
  • Integrated into the new Session Store API.
  • Integrated into the tab events for faster capturing.
  • Added min/max guessing to the capture dialog.
  • The numeric builder now ignores character encoding.

Location Navigator 0.6.2

Location Navigator 0.6.2 has been released. Changes for this version are:

  • Added locales: es-AR and pt-Br.
  • Added support for Bon Echo, and nightly trunk builds.

My Firefox Extensions

I thought I would give a quick run down of what Firefox extensions I’ve created, work on, and are currently maintaining. Just so you have an idea of what I work on, what I have worked on, and what I’ve abandoned.

Forecastfox
Get international weather forecasts from AccuWeather.com, and display it in any toolbar or statusbar with this highly customizable and unobtrusive extension.
This extension is one I am actively working on. Version 0.8.5 has been released, and work on 0.9 is well under way.
Location Navigator
Location Navigator is an extension that lets you grab a location, select a portion of the location that varies, and then navigate up or down from that starting spot.
This is is actively maintained as well. Probably not as frequently as Forecastfox though. Version 0.6 has been released, and I’ve made design plans for version 0.7
Flickr Sidebar
This Flickr sidebar is used for viewing and searching photo lists. You can access it by the command key Ctrl+Shift+F, the toolbar button, or clicking on the menu option View|Sidebars|Flickr Sidebar. Once you have authorized the extension to work with your flickr account, you can search through or view a full list of your photos, your favorites, everyone’s photos, your individual contacts, or your groups. Double clicking a photo opens it’s page in the current tab. You can also use all the standard link modifiers to open in tabs and windows.
This is an extension I’ve just started. Version 0.1 has been released, and I have some ideas for future version.
Tip of The Day
Adds a “Tip of the Day” bar to the bottom of the window. The reason I created this extension is to implement bug 19463.
I have not released a new version of this since Firefox version .10. I’m currently reworking this so a new version should be available soon.
Rsszilla
This extension was going to implement an RSS reader for mozilla applications. I never released any code for it, and it is now abandoned.
Finder
Finder was going to be used to integrate an extension lookup web service with Firefox. I never released any code for it, and it is now abandoned.

Extension Pimping

As an extension author, you like to see your extension get used by the widest audience possible. To do this, sometimes you have to pimp your extension out to several places so that it can get exposure. This brings up several questions. How much is too much? Where should I post about my extension? How ethical is it to try and get your extension into top ratings, or top download lists? What is the best approach for letting people know about your extension?

Location Navigator 0.4

I’ve created a new version of Location Navigator for the Deer Park release of Firefox. You can get it here. Here is what has changed:

This version has been greatly reworked. For the user, you can now select the portion of the location that varies, and how you want to increment that portion. The command keys have been changed so they should now work on the Mac. A Location Navigator submenu has been add to the Go menu. You can now capture and send the original referring location when navigating. You can set a background color on the buttons, if the location is in global history or it fails an HTTP “head” request. A new set of icons have been created, and it has been updated to use the new features in Deer Park. For the developer, the backend has been rewritten. This makes it easy to create different ways to increment the location. Future plans include a custom list incrementor and a date incrementor.

update.mozilla.org

Has anyone else been having issues with update.mozilla.org lately. We’ve asked for version 0.5.9 of ForecastFox to be added to u.m.o on December 22, and It’s still not been updated. I’ve also have version 0.3 of Location navigator that was requested to be added on January 7, and its not been updated either.

Extension Updates

I haven’t posted for a while so I thought I would throw this out. Work is continuing on ForecastFox, we are working on a 0.7 release. There will be lots of changes in this release: including redesigned dialogs and Mozilla Suite support.

I’m getting ready to release a new version of Location Navigator as well. New in this version will be menu, and keyboard access.
