Today we released the final version of Netscape Navigator 9. The main feature of this release is the inclusion of a migration extension that will help users move to either Flock or Firefox. This is our subtle little hint for you to stop using Navigator and move on to something else.

Although I did not kill Navigator, I am the sole remaining engineer that is working on it. That being said, a single person does not constitute enough resources to reasonably maintain a browser or e-mail client. Here is the official announcement about the “End of Life” for Netscape software. Since we will no longer be working on these products, my responsibilities will be transforming. I will be working on system integration. That means I will be working with AOL’s APIs to provide integration between applications and also to provide extensions that use those APIs. Changes in a persons work responsibilities are always a scary thing, but I’m excited about what the future holds.

Today we released version 9a1 of Netscape Messenger. This release is the first public alpha of Netscape Messenger 9, a mail and news client, to complement the Netscape Navigator Web browser. Last night we released Navigator 9 Release Candidate 1. You can catch the original announcement at blog.netscape.com. There are lots of changes since Beta 3. Below are some of the notable changes:
- Added splash screen
- Removed social news integration
- Exposed more preferences in the Preference Dialog for tabs and the mini-browser
- Moved custom FTP style out of userContent.css
- Added URL correction preferences to Advanced Preferences page
- Added drop-down menu to print button
- Added drop-down menu to home button
- Added Firefox profile importing
- Added support for importing Netscape 8 bookmarks after the initial install
